The Taklamakan desert edge provides sandy, well-drained soil with extreme day-night temperature swings. The yam root grows slowly and densely, accumulating higher levels of mucilage protein, amino acids and mineral trace elements than ordinary field-grown yam.
Irrigation comes exclusively from snowmelt of the Kunlun Mountains. The region has virtually no industrial pollution, and the dry climate naturally suppresses pests — allowing minimal intervention farming.
